Vintage Homespun Wata-iri HANTEN - Padded Kimono Coat
This is a vintage cotton padded kimono coat called a wata-iri (padded with cotton) hanten. It is for wearing over a kimono in colder weather. This was sewn by hand. I am not sure of the fiber of the fabric, but i believe it is hand woven fabric, as it came from an old house and the owner identified it as some of his mother's woven fabric. (Judging by his age, i would say this hanten is from the middle of the twentieth century.)
This hanten is in super condition. It looks never worn, and smells fine. Ever so slightly musty, like an old book, but good for its age and the fact it has been in a drawer for decades. It is lined with pink fabric, and the sleeves are lined with different fabric and have reinforced edges (see photo 7). There are no ties on this one, but you can attach them or use something like a cardigan clasp to keep it shut. But it looks cool open also, and will still keep you warm.
