SiLK SHIBORI Fabric Bolt - Tied and Undyed
This is a vintage bolt of silk damask kimono fabric, tied for shibori dyeing and ready to be dyed. It is 100% damask silk. In the 5th photo, you can see the damask pattern woven into the fabric at the end. A very classic asian wander pattern and chrysanthemums. Even bound up as it is, it is a sculptural object, a work of art. There are labels attached to one end which have hand writing, but I am not sure what it signifies; perhaps the eventual owner of the fabric, perhaps the binder of the silk, or perhaps some sort of instructions....I am not sure. I would estimate this fabric to be from between the 50's and the 70's. Middle to late Showa era.
The pattern of the shibori is what is called kanoko shibori, or doe spot shibori. This is a pattern of repetitive small rings. This kanoko is in tight diagonal lines, even across the entire bolt. The entire bolt will have the pattern once dyed. This type of kanoko is popular from that era, and was mostly used for haori. I imagine this bolt may be a haori bolt. It is 4.64 meters long as is. Normally, the length doubles when these are unbound, so that would make this bolt just under 10 meters. That makes sense for a haori bolt.
The last photo is an example of a similar bolt which has been dyed and is in the process of being unbound, with the bolt offered for sale behind it.
